In 1923, an enterprising salesman named Merritt J. Osborn had an idea for an innovative cleaning product, and with this idea, founded a company that grew to become the global leader in water, hygiene, and energy technologies and services.

As a traveling salesman, Osborn noticed that hotels lost revenue by having to close rooms while the carpets were sent out for cleaning. To counter this problem, he developed Absorbit®, a product that could clean carpets on-site, and Economics Laboratory - today known as Ecolab - was born.

Osborn's company soon branched out into commercial dishwasher detergents and other cleaning and sanitizing products that saved customers time, labor and money. The growing firm expanded its product and service solutions to include food safety, hygiene and healthcare, and more recently, water treatment and energy technologies and services.

Today, Ecolab delivers comprehensive programs and services to many industries, including food and beverage, foodservice, hospitality and lodging, healthcare, education, industrial and energy. Headquartered in St. Paul, Minnesota, the company has more than 40,000 employees in more than 160 countries around the world. In Elk Grove Village, Ecolab operates a 136,000-square-foot facility at 1060 Thorndale Avenue. The facility opened in 1991 and currently has 200 employees.

"Our Elk Grove Village facility is designed to provide centralized transportation channels to deliver products to our customers in the U.S. and Canada," says Art Young, plant manager of Ecolab's Elk Grove facility. "This facility refurbishes commercial dishwashing machines and manufactures dish racks for distribution to customers in the U.S. and Canada. Our location also manages the global distribution of dishwasher repair parts to Ecolab locations around the world."

In addition, the Elk Grove facility is the regional operations base for several Ecolab divisions such as Pest Elimination, Equipment Care, and Textile Care. It also houses an Institutional field sales training center, as well as Corporate Account and Institutional sales staff.
